At the heart of a value-driven quest for a sustainable, human-centric and resilient economy, is the quest for an industrial model that nicely combines Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Human Intelligence (HI).  SeCoIIA, a finalist of the first Industry 5.0 Award, is one of these projects that demonstrated the major role of AI in achieving Industry 5.0 vision. The project, coordinated by Adrien Bécue aimed at securing the digital transition of the manufacturing industry towards more connected, collaborative, flexible and automated production techniques. An outcome of this project is the development by Adrien of an analytic tool, called SeCoIIA, that can predict the effect of AI adoption by an organization in the context of Industry 5.0.

Adrien is AI & Cybersecurity expert at THALES, and PHD student at the University of Porto where he develops a thesis about AI effect on innovation capacity. This work is supervised by Joao Gama, a EurIA fellow, and Pedro Quelhas Brito, a Digital Business specialist, both Professors at the University of Porto. Adrien has conducted an in-depth review of engineering, humanities and management literature. While theories of replacement predict the substitution of HI by AI, theories of augmentation predict the enhancement of HI by AI and theories of deception predict the manipulation of HI by AI. To solve this debate, Adrien has reviewed 10 innovation projects, conducted 20 expert interviews and analyzed 40 industrial use-cases. Bridging the gap between replacement, augmentation and deception theories, Adrien’s work proves that the effect of AI on HI capacity can be substitutive, synergic, or deceptive, depending on a combination of 4 factors: organization age, AI maturity, manufacturing strategy, and innovation capacity. These 4 factors can be measured by a set of 12 indicators and the effect of AI predicted by SeCoIIA by computation of a Bayesian Network.

Beyond SeCoIIA, Several projects have contributed to the construction of SeCoIIA’s training data set. CYBERFACTORY#1 aims to optimize and secure the Factory of the Future. SHERLOCK aims to enhance the human side in human-robot collaboration. 5G-TIMBER aims to enhance 5G adoption in the wood value chain. STAR fosters AI in dynamic and unpredictable manufacturing environments.

With a minimal set of collected evidence, SeCoIIA can: i) predict the most likely effect of AI on an organization’s innovation capacity; ii) infer its industrial age according to the Industry 5.0 paradigm, iii) verify its AI maturity according to the system engineering theory, and recommend the best manufacturing strategy according to management science. The tool captures user inputs through an online survey which is accessible at: https://survey.zohopublic.eu/zs/YkTzHN. If you are involved in industrial AI use-cases, please take a few minutes to answer this questionnaire. Your effort will be rewarded by free access to the study results, including strategic recommendations for a successful transition to Industry 5.0.
