The European Manufacturing Conference (EMC) 2024, hosted in Brussels, proved to be a landmark event, convening over 420 industry experts, policymakers, and innovators to collectively shape the future of European manufacturing. The conference served as a pivotal forum for in-depth discussions on innovation, sustainability, and strategic investments, all of which are critical to advancing the sector’s growth and global competitiveness. 

The Day 1 commenced with opening addresses by the Chairman, Olaf Pannenbäcker (EFFRA), alongside Caroline Viarouge (EIT Manufacturing) and Maurizio Gattiglio (Manufuture ETF). The opening session was further enriched by contributions from Maria Cristina Russo, Director of Prosperity at the Directorate-General for Research and Innovation (DG RTD), and Normunds Popens, Deputy Director-General at the Directorate-General for Education, Youth, Sport, and Culture. 

The discussions throughout the day were centered on three primary topics: 

  • Innovation and Global Competitiveness: Examining Europe’s position in driving technological advancements and maintaining a leading role in manufacturing. 
  • Sustainability: Highlighting the integration of circular economy practices to support sustainable industrial growth. 
  • Economic and Defense Security: Emphasizing the strategic significance of robust industrial frameworks for economic stability and defense capabilities. 

The first day concluded with a vibrant networking reception, enabling participants to establish meaningful connections and fostering opportunities for future collaboration across the industry. 

The Day 2, featured a series of in-depth panel discussions focused on strategic investments, the adoption of emerging technologies, and initiatives aimed at bridging the skills gap within the workforce. A consistent theme throughout these sessions was the imperative to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion across the manufacturing sector. 

The highlight of the day was an insightful keynote address by Alvin Wang Graylin, who shared his perspectives on the future of artificial intelligence (AI) and how Europe can strategically position itself as a leader in this transformative domain. 

The successful conclusion of EMC 2024 is a testament to the collective commitment of all stakeholders to advancing European manufacturing. The event not only provided a platform for critical dialogue but also acted as a catalyst for ongoing innovation and strategic development, paving the way for a sustainable and globally competitive future.
