The European Factories of the Future Research Association (EFFRA) has officially launched a new series of six Research & Innovation (R&I) Papers, each developed by one of its dedicated Working Groups. Together, these papers represent a major milestone in defining Europe’s future manufacturing priorities and directly contribute to the evolution of EFFRA’s strategic R&I roadmap.
A coordinated vision for European manufacturing
The six papers are the result of intensive collaboration across EFFRA’s Working Groups, which were established to address key industrial challenges, align stakeholder perspectives, and translate emerging needs into actionable research priorities.
Each Working Group focuses on a critical domain for Europe’s industrial transformation:
- WG1 – Productive and Flexible Manufacturing
- WG2 – Circularity and Remanufacturing
- WG3 – Human-Centric Manufacturing: Skills, Tools and AI
- WG4 – Manufacturing for the Energy Transition
- WG5 – Manufacturing for Transport
- WG6 – Dissemination and Exploitation of R&I Results
These newly released R&I Papers consolidate insights from industry, research, and policy communities, identifying both current challenges and future opportunities across these domains.
Feeding the EFFRA strategic roadmap
A key objective of the Working Groups is to enrich and further specify EFFRA’s long-term Research & Innovation roadmap, ensuring it reflects real industrial needs and emerging technological trends.
The six R&I Papers play a central role in this process. They:
- Define priority research directions for the next programming cycles, including FP10
- Provide evidence-based recommendations for policymakers and funding bodies
- Identify cross-cutting enablers, such as digitalisation, AI, skills, and circularity
- Strengthen alignment with major EU ambitions, including competitiveness, sustainability, and strategic autonomy
By integrating these contributions, EFFRA continues to build on its legacy of roadmap development, such as the “Factories of the Future” initiatives, which have historically guided European manufacturing research and innovation agendas.
A collective step towards Europe’s industrial future
With this launch, EFFRA reinforces its role as a key platform for co-creation between industry, academia, and policymakers. The six R&I Papers not only reflect the collective intelligence of Europe’s manufacturing community but also provide a concrete foundation for future programmes and investments.
As Europe prepares its next research and innovation framework, these papers offer a timely and strategic contribution, ensuring that manufacturing remains a cornerstone of a competitive, sustainable, and resilient European economy.
