Led by Liviu Dan Toma (Fraunhofer HDL) and Andreas Kailer (Fraunhofer IWM), this session explored how bio-based wood composites, developed using renewable fibers, biopolymers, and recycled additives, are being engineered into high-performance components. The workshop covered innovative techniques such as microwave-assisted extrusion and introduced a novel fiberglass composite barrel to improve energy efficiency and material consistency. Tribological testing showed impressive results, with materials performing well under dry conditions and high temperatures.

This workshop, featuring Marco Scatto and Angela Davidov (Mixcycling), offered a deep dive into the formulation of bio-based, biodegradable plastics. From compostable polymers to Mixcycling’s patented non-thermal plasma (NTP) fiber enhancement, the event highlighted real-world applications such as biodegradable bottle caps. The team also addressed regulatory alignment with the upcoming Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR), showing how GREEN-LOOP solutions meet both environmental and industry demands.

Focused on turning end-of-life tyres into high-performance rubber panels, this session showcased the collaborative work of NCC UK, the University of Bristol, and the Bristol Composites Institute. The panels are designed for construction use, especially in anti-vibration applications, and are processed through devulcanisation techniques. An exciting development is the use of lignin, a bio-derived flame retardant, to enhance fire safety. Ongoing research into lignin-based coatings hints at even broader application potential.

🔗  Value Chain Platform
The GREEN-LOOP Value Chain Platform is a flexible, scalable software tool designed to optimize sustainable and circular value chains. Its modular structure allows easy integration of new features and supports evolving business needs. At its core are three embedded AI models that provide predictive insights into bio-based materials: tensile strength for bio-rubber, elastic modulus for bioplastics, and structural deformation for wood composites. These models help accelerate development and improve performance, bridging the gap between material design and real-world application.
This demonstrates GREEN-LOOP’s commitment to closing the loop on material waste through innovative, high-performing, and sustainable solutions.
