Call for Research & Innovation Funding Increase

BRUSSELS, 11 October: The European Parliament's Committee on Budgets (BUDG) has called for an additional €30 million in funds that are proposed to be allocated to research, innovation and education in the European Union's budget.

The €30 million is in addition to the funding already outlined in the European Commission's budget proposal. The Committee on Budgets decision echoed calls by its rapporteur, Ms Francesca Balzani (S&D, IT), who has previously warned that the Europe 2020 growth strategy could be in danger of falling victim to the current austerity climate.

The Committee will vote on a draft resolution next week. A resolution will form the basis of the European Parliament's budget negotiations with the European Council. The European Parliament will vote on this resolution during its 26th October plenary session.
